A Superfund site is a location that has been polluted with hazardous materials and is designated for cleanup under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as Superfund. The CERCLA was established in 1980 to address abandoned hazardous waste sites and allows the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up such sites and compel responsible parties to perform cleanups or reimburse the government for EPA- led cleanups. The ultimate goal of the Superfund program is to return hazardous-waste sites back to productive use, protecting human health and the environment
