A torn Achilles, also known as an Achilles tendon rupture, is a tear in the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle that spans from the calf muscles to the heel. This injury can occur due to sudden downward or upward movement of the foot, forced upward flexion of the foot outside its normal range of motion, sudden direct trauma or damage to the tendon, sudden use of the Achilles after prolonged periods of inactivity, such as bed rest or leg injury, intense sports overuse, or twisting or jerking motions. Symptoms of a torn Achilles include the sudden onset of sharp pain in the heel, a snapping sound may be heard as the tendon breaks, and walking becomes difficult. The classic sign of a ruptured Achilles tendon is feeling (and sometimes hearing) a pop or snap at the back of your ankle. Achilles tendon ruptures are most often caused by sudden, strenuous athletic activity that was not preceded by proper stretching. Treatment for a torn Achilles can include surgery to reconnect the ends of the torn tendon or nonsurgical treatment, depending on the severity of the injury.
