A UFO, or unidentified flying object, is any perceived aerial phenomenon that cannot be immediately identified or explained. Most UFO sightings are identified as known objects or atmospheric phenomena, while a small number remain unexplained. UFOs first became a major subject of public interest after World War II, possibly sparked by the development of rocket technology. Some interpret the sighting of UFOs as evidence that extraterrestrial life exists and has visited Earth. The first well-known UFO sighting occurred in 1947, when businessman Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane. The U.S. government has conducted studies and investigations into UFO reports, such as Project Blue Book, without confirmation of the fantastical claims of believers. Currently, the U.S. government has two entities dedicated to UAP (or UFO) data collection and analysis: NASAs UAP independent study team and the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
