ULEZ cameras are used by Transport for London (TfL) to monitor which cars enter and exit the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London. They record drivers’ number plates, which then get checked against a database to see if the vehicle complies with ULEZ rules. If it doesn’t, then the drivers get charged a daily fee of £12.50. The cameras are on constantly, operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week – except Christmas Day – so there is no avoiding them if you enter the ULEZ zone. As of September 2023, there are around 2,750 ULEZ cameras placed across London all tracking vehicles. Some cameras are multipurpose and also cover the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and the Congestion Charge. The ULEZ cameras work by scanning a vehicles number plate and checking if it is compliant or not within the low emission zone. It will then see if the driver has prepaid the charge or not.
