A voice-over is a production technique where a voice is recorded for off-screen use, often serving the purpose of narrating a story or explaining information. The voice is heard but not seen, and is added in addition to the existing narrative. Voice-overs are used in various media productions, including television, filmmaking, theatre, radio, video games, event announcements, tourist attractions, commercials, and other presentations. There are two main types of voice-overs: narration and non-narration. In narration, a voice is describing the action on-screen and telling a story based on whats happening, while in non-narration, the voice-overs are informational. Voice-over is not to be confused with voice acting or the process of replacing dialogue with a translated version, which is called dubbing or revoicing. The voice-over artist is usually unseen by the audience and could be anyone, regardless of age or experience.
