A "water puppy" refers to a puppy born with a medical condition called anasarca, which involves severe edema—an abnormal accumulation of excess fluid in the puppy's tissues and body cavities. These puppies appear swollen and bloated, often two to four times the size of their littermates. The condition is life-threatening, often making natural birth impossible, and usually requires a C-section. It commonly affects certain breeds, especially brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, and Pugs, but can occur in various breeds. The exact cause is unknown but may relate to genetic factors, immune responses, or infections.
