A wet dream, also known as a nocturnal emission, is a spontaneous orgasm during sleep that includes ejaculation for a male, or vaginal lubrication or an orgasm for a female. Wet dreams usually happen during dreams that have sexual images, and they begin during puberty when the body starts making more testosterone, a male hormone. They are most common during adolescence and early young adult years, but they may happen any time after puberty. While wet dreams are typically associated with adolescent boys, they are a common experience for both sexes from puberty through adulthood. Some common myths surrounding wet dreams include that they are caused by masturbation during sleep, that they only happen to males, and that they are a sign of a medical problem. However, these are all false. Wet dreams are a normal, healthy occurrence and cannot be stopped from happening.
