A window well is a recess in the ground around a building that allows for the installation of larger windows in a basement, either below ground or partially below ground. Window wells increase the natural light in otherwise dark basements and provide an emergency exit route. They are typically reinforced with galvanized steel, concrete, or plastic to ensure that water doesn’t seep into the basement through the window. Window wells can also provide a means of egress, or exit, from the basement level in case of an emergency. To avoid debris and prevent fall injuries into the window well, they are sometimes covered by a window well cover. Proper installation and regular maintenance are necessary to prevent damage or accidents.
