A working set is a concept used in computer science, weightlifting, and bodybuilding. In computer science, it refers to the amount of memory that a process requires in a given time interval. In weightlifting, working sets are a collection of sets where most of the workouts volume is done, performed in conjunction with top sets. After the one high-intensity set (the top set), the load from the barbell is dropped, and many sets of the same rep range as the top set are performed. These are the working sets, which are always set at a lower intensity of load. The purpose of working sets is to provide the bulk of the training stimulus after the performance of a top set. In bodybuilding, a working set is any set that is performed close to muscular failure and brings some kind of benefit or adaptation. Warm-up sets are performed before the first working set with lighter weights and not taken as close to failure or stimulus.
