what is a zine

A zine is a small, independently-produced publication that is usually self-published and circulated in small batches. Zines can be created by anyone and can cover a wide range of topics and genres, including art, literature, politics, and more. They are often photocopied and bound in a DIY manner, with editions that are easily reproduced. Zines can include text, images, artwork, found objects, or any other creative material that helps to express the authors message. Zines are not out there to make a profit but, rather, to add other, often unheard voices into the mix. Zines have served as a powerful outlet for content considered to be too niche, risqué, or outside of the mainstream, in terms of more traditional/commercial forms of publication. Creating a zine can be a great art project for students in school because it allows them to explore their creativity and express themselves in a unique and personal way.
