AdBlue, also known as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) or AUS 32, is a liquid used in diesel engines with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce the amount of harmful gases released into the atmosphere. AdBlue is an aqueous urea solution made with 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. When a diesel engine burns fuel, it produces nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are harmful pollutants. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust system, where it reacts with the NOx to produce harmless nitrogen and water vapor. AdBlue is used in vehicles with SCR catalysts, which treat exhaust gases before they leave the vehicle. AdBlue is a safe-to-use fluid and is certified according to ISO 22241, an international standard that protects vehicles from contamination that could cause serious damage. If a diesel car meets the latest emissions standards (called Euro 6), it is likely to use AdBlue.
