The AFL stands for the Australian Football League, which is the pre-eminent and only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. It is Australias biggest sport and is played professionally by 18 teams. The game is played with an oval ball between two teams of eighteen players on a large oval-shaped field, with the aim of kicking the ball through the two tallest goal-posts at either end of the ground. The AFL is known for its high average attendance, drawing crowds of over 35,000 for each game at the highest level. It is also heavily involved in promoting and developing the sport in Australia, providing funds for local leagues and administering programs for young boys and girls.
