Agenda 21 is a non-binding, voluntarily implemented action plan of the United Nations with regard to sustainable development. It is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally, and locally by organizations of the United Nations System, governments, and major groups in every area in which humans impact the environment. The objective of Agenda 21 is to achieve global sustainable development by combating environmental damage, poverty, and disease through global cooperation on common interests, mutual needs, and shared responsibilities. One major objective of the Agenda 21 is that every local government should draw its own local Agenda 21. The plan calls for the provision of basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare, and the promotion of education, gender equality, and human rights. The "21" in Agenda 21 refers to the original goal of achieving global sustainable development by the 21st century.
