Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that was developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century. It is a comprehensive system of throwing, joint-locking, striking, and pinning techniques, coupled with training in traditional Japanese weapons such as the sword, staff, and knife. Aikido is now practiced in around 140 countries and is one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world. Aikidos fundamental principles include irimi (entering), atemi, kokyu-ho (breathing control), sankaku-ho (triangular principle), and tenkan (turning) movements that redirect the opponents attack momentum. Its curriculum comprises various techniques, primarily throws and joint locks. It also includes a weapons system encompassing the bokken, tanto, and jo. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art that seeks to unite body, mind, and spirit with the universal forces of nature. It promotes peace through us out into the world.
