Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin, and to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Amoxicillin is available as capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, and suspension (liquid) to take by mouth, and it is usually taken every 12 hours (twice a day) or every 8 hours (three times a day) with or without food. The length of treatment depends on the type of infection that you have. Amoxicillin is only available on prescription. The most common side effects of amoxicillin are feeling sick (nausea) and diarrhea. It is important to take amoxicillin only when it is needed, as taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases the risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
