An ally is a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose. In recent years, the term "ally" has been adopted specifically to a person supporting a marginalized group. An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group. Being an ally means that you recognize the rights and struggles of a marginalized group and actively work to support them.
For example, a straight ally, heterosexual ally, or cis ally is a heterosexual and cisgender person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ social movements. Allies can identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, cisgender, intersex, queer, questioning, or heterosexual.
Allyship requires support that is accompanied by a distinct protocol that many find challenging to achieve. Allies may receive criticism for a variety of reasons, such as being unable to step outside their own heteronormative world to advocate or using LGBT advocacy as a means to gain popularity and status. However, studies show that elite allies have a positive effect on the policy goals of a social movement, whatever those goals may be.
To let people know that they can consider you an ally, one easy thing to consider is making your office, classroom, or room be visibly accepting, such as having a rainbow flag or ally sticker displayed, which can create a visible space of inclusivity and comfort. Active allies utilize their credibility to create a more inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive, and find ways to make their privilege work for others.
