The American Bully is a breed of dog that was standardized and recognized in 2004 by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) . The breed is not recognized by The Kennel Club or American Kennel Club (AKC) as a purebred dog. The American Bully is divided into four categories by the ABKC, including the Pocket, Standard, Classic, and XL. The XL Bully is the largest variation of the American Bully breed. Although they differ in size, these dogs’ general configuration and appearance remain constant in that they should be medium/large-size dogs with compact muscular bodies, heavy bones, and blocky squarish heads. The breed is said to have originated in the US in the late 1980s, when American pit bull terriers and other breeds were crossbred. The temperament of adult dogs is very much dependent on training, and the breed can be very demanding and needs to be properly trained. The XL Bully was responsible for over 50% of the deaths caused by dogs in the UK in the period between 2021 and 2023. The British government has committed to banning the breed due to its perceived danger.
