An anti-suicide vest, also known as an anti-suicide smock or turtle suit, is a tear-resistant, single-piece garment designed to prevent a person, typically an inmate or a hospitalized individual at risk of suicide, from using the clothing to harm themselves by forming a noose or ligature. It is made of thick, quilted material that cannot be rolled, folded, or torn into strips, and it has no buttons, zippers, cords, collars, pockets, or loops that could be used for self-harm. The garment is sleeveless, fastened with strong Velcro or similar fasteners, and worn without other clothing to minimize risk. Its primary function is to ensure the safety of the wearer by preventing suicide attempts through hanging or strangulation, while still allowing mobility, modesty, and warmth.
