An ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) special agent is a highly trained, elite law enforcement officer who investigates violations of federal laws and regulations related to the criminal misuse of firearms and explosives, firearms trafficking, violent crime, and terrorism. They are responsible for investigating violations of federal laws relating to firearms, explosives, arson, and alcohol and tobacco. Special agents work closely with their partners at the local, state, tribal, and federal level, from law enforcement and public safety officials to scientists and forensics experts. Once agents complete basic training, they are assigned to any one of the ATF field divisions across the country, where they use cutting-edge ballistics and forensics technologies as part of the investigative process. Special agents must be tough, both physically and mentally, and able to handle rigorous training, personal risks, irregular hours, and extensive travel. They are subject to reassignment to any ATF office in the United States or overseas. As of December 2019, ATF has 1,714 special agents stationed across 25 field divisions, hundreds of field and satellite offices, and overseas posts. The entire process of becoming an ATF special agent can take 12 months or longer from start to finish.
