An EP, short for extended play, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single but fewer than an album or LP record. EPs generally contain four to six tracks, with a runtime under 30 minutes. EPs are considered "less expensive and time-consuming" for an artist to produce than an album. EPs are usually released by emerging artists to start building a fan base, showcase more than one song, and explore different genres and potential collaborations. Releasing an EP can also be a great way for album-focused artists who are between album cycles but want to stay connected to their fanbase. The number of tracks or the playing time does not determine the definition of an EP; an EP is typically seen as four (or more) tracks of equal importance, as opposed to a four-track single with an obvious A-side and three B-sides.
