Form I-94, also known as the Arrival-Departure Record Card, is a form used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to keep track of the arrival and departure to/from the United States of people who are not United States citizens or lawful permanent residents. The form is issued to aliens who are admitted to the U.S., who are adjusting status while in the U.S., or extending their stay, among other things. The form is not issued to U.S. citizens, returning resident aliens, aliens with immigrant visas, and most Canadian citizens visiting or in transit. The form is attached to the nonimmigrant visitors passport upon entry to the U.S. by a CBP officer, and the visitor must exit the U.S. on or before the departure date stamped on the Form I-94. The form number is also known as the Departure Number or Admission Record Number. The I-94s expiration date is listed as "D/S" for duration of status for students on an F visa, and their stay is extended by having their SEVIS record updated and a new I-20 issued, without a new Form I-94 being issued. The switch away from paper Form I-94 to electronic Form I-94 was carried out in 2013, and most Arrival and/or Departure records are created electronically upon arrival. Travelers can apply for a new I-94, get their most recent I-94, view travel history, or see how much longer they can remain in the U.S. based on the terms of their admission on the CBPs I-94, Travel Records for U.S. Visitors website.
