An IEP, or Individualized Education Program, is a written education plan designed to meet the learning needs of a child with a disability or special health care needs. It is a map that lays out the program of special education instruction, supports, and services kids need to make progress and thrive in school. The IEP process is more involved than that of a 504 Plan, which is a document created to outline the specific accessibility requirements for students with disabilities who do not require specialized instruction but need the assurance that they will receive equal access to public education and services. The IEP is covered by special education law, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and is developed for eligible kids who attend public school, including charter schools. The IEP outlines the goals and any support services that may be needed for a child to succeed in school, and it should be updated annually to ensure that the student is receiving the most effective accommodations for their specific circumstances.
