An internist, also known as a doctor of internal medicine, is a medical specialist who focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of adults. They are experts in the internal organs and systems of the body, although they are not limited to those areas. Internists can provide preventive care and treat a wide range of conditions, from skin rashes to ear infections. They often manage chronic illnesses and develop long-lasting relationships with their patients.
Some internists choose to specialize in a particular area of internal medicine, such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, or infectious disease. These subspecialists have additional training, typically lasting one to three years, to become experts in their chosen field. Internists may work in various settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, hospice care centers, or research institutions.
