An NGO, or non-governmental organization, is an organization that is formed independent from government. NGOs are typically nonprofit entities that function independently of any government and are organized on a local, national, or international level to address issues in support of the public good. While there is no universally agreed-upon definition of an NGO, typically it is a voluntary group or association founded by citizens. NGOs can focus on a wide range of issues, such as human rights, healthcare, environmental protection, and animal welfare. They can work to promote social or political change on a broad scale or very locally. NGOs can be funded by donations and grants. The term "NGO" is sometimes used synonymously with civil society organization (CSO), which is any association founded by citizens. NGOs play a critical part in developing society, improving communities, and promoting citizen participation.
