A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is an unoccupied underwater robot that is connected to a ship by a series of cables. ROVs are used for various purposes, including exploration, scientific research, and industrial tasks within the subsea oil and gas industry. They are highly maneuverable and can be equipped with cameras, lights, sonar systems, and manipulator arms for retrieving small objects, cutting lines, or attaching lifting hooks to larger objects. ROVs can also carry tooling packages for undertaking specific tasks such as valve operations, hydraulic functions, and component replacement. Most ROVs are equipped with at least a still camera, video camera, and lights, meaning that they can transit images and video back to the ship. ROVs range in size from that of a small computer to as large as a small truck, and they are operated by a crew either aboard a vessel/floating platform or on proximate land.
