"Anna Karenina" is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, first published in book form in 1878. The story revolves around Anna Karenina, a married socialite, and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky, though their relationship is only one component of the plot. The novel explores themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, progress, carnal desire and passion, and the agrarian connection to land in contrast to the lifestyles of the city. The story also follows the courtship of Dollys younger sister, Kitty, by two suitors: Konstantin Levin, an awkward landowner, and Alexei Vronsky, a dashing military man. The novel is considered to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written.
