Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is a medical term that refers to a heart defect present at birth, also known as a congenital heart defect. It is characterized by a hole in the heart between the upper chambers (atria), which can lead to an increased amount of blood flow through the lungs. This condition can vary in severity, and while small atrial septal defects might not cause any concern and can close on their own during infancy or early childhood, larger, long-term defects can potentially lead to heart and lung damage, requiring surgical repair to prevent complications.
On the other hand, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. It affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. ASD can manifest in various ways, with individuals exhibiting differences in behavior, communication, interaction, and learning compared to most other people. The abilities of individuals with ASD can vary significantly, and the disorder can last throughout a person’s life, although symptoms may improve over time. ASD typically begins before the age of 3 years, and while some children may show symptoms within the first 12 months of life, others may not exhibit symptoms until 24 months of age or later. As children with ASD become adolescents and young adults, they may have difficulties developing and maintaining friendships and communicating.
