Dhamma is a set of edicts that formed a policy of the 3rd Mauryan Emperor Ashoka The Great, who succeeded to the Mauryan throne in modern-day India around 269 B.C.E. Ashokas Dhamma was more or less based on the teachings of Buddhism, and he adopted this policy post-Kallinga war, which filled him with guilt and remorse. Dhamma was a way of life and code of behavior that the people were to follow, emphasizing peace, non-violence, and social welfare. It was related to dharma, which is the fundamental law that Hindus, Buddhists, and Jainists believe applies to all beings. Dhamma included such concepts as respect and compassion for others, fair treatment of all, benevolence, non-violence, religious toleration, helping the unfortunate, and the humane treatment of animals.
