An ATF agent is a highly trained, elite law enforcement officer who investigates violations of federal laws and regulations related to the criminal misuse of firearms and explosives, firearms trafficking, violent crime, and terrorism. They are responsible for investigating criminal acts relating to arson, alcohol, explosives, firearms, and tobacco. ATF special agents are subject to reassignment to any ATF office in the United States or overseas. They work closely with their partners at the local, state, tribal, and federal level, from law enforcement and public safety officials to scientists and forensics experts. Once agents complete basic training, they are assigned to any one of the ATF field divisions across the country, where they use cutting-edge ballistics and forensics technologies as part of the investigative process. Special agents may choose to enhance their tactical skills by pursuing specialized career tracks such as Special Agent Canine Handler, Explosives Enforcement Officer, Certified Explosives Specialist, Certified Fire Investigator, and Criminal Profiler. Veteran agents with specialized skills, experience, and certifications can apply to serve on several elite rapid response teams such as Special Response Teams and National Response Teams. The entire process of becoming an ATF special agent can take 12 months or longer from start to finish.
