Facebook offers two-factor authentication through authentication apps, SMS, and physical security keys. Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account, requiring a verification code from your device each time you make a login attempt. This way, anyone needs access to your phone to log in, even if they know your username and password.
Facebook recommends using an authentication app, such as Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile, both of which randomly generate authentication codes each time you use the app. To set up two-factor authentication with an authentication app, follow these steps:
- Open the Facebook app on your phone.
- Go to the menu and scroll down to "Settings & Privacy".
- Tap "Settings".
- Scroll down to "Security" and tap it.
- Scroll down to "Two-Factor Authentication" and tap it.
- Select "Authentication App" as your preferred method.
- Follow the prompts to set up the third-party authenticator app. If you dont already have it installed, you can download it from several sources.
- If the Facebook app is on the same phone as your authenticator app, tap "Set up on same device", which will save the key to the app. You can also save the key by copying the code and manually entering it into the authenticator app.
- Confirm the prompt to save the key.
Once youve set up two-factor authentication with an authentication app, youll need to enter a verification code from the app each time you log in to Facebook.
