Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a concept mentioned in the Bible in Matthew 12:22-32 and Mark 3:22-30. It is the sin of attributing to Satan what is the work of the Spirit of God, such as when the Pharisees accused Jesus of driving out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. The sin is essentially the sin of rejecting Christ, and it is an ongoing hardening of the heart against the Holy Spirit who is trying to lead one to repent of sin and believe in Christ. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is not simply saying something bad about the Holy Spirit, but is a persistent rejection of the convicting work of the Spirit, whose job it is to expose our sin and lead us to accept Christ. The sin of blasphemy against the Spirit cannot be forgiven since one who does not acknowledge his sin does not seek to have it forgiven. It is an issue of the heart that manifests in one’s words and actions. However, it is important to note that any sin can be forgiven, even the seven deadly sins, as long as one truly listens to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and asks for pardon and forgiveness.
