Blue Curacao is a liqueur that is used in numerous cocktails throughout the world. It is made by infusing the peels of the Laraha citrus fruit, which is native to the island of Curaçao, in alcohol to give the liqueur its citrusy aroma and taste. The blue color in the liqueur comes from food coloring which has been added to give it its distinctive coloring. Blue Curacao has a distinct taste that is a little bit bitter and a little bit sweet, reminiscent of Triple Sec, another popular citrus/orange-flavored liqueur. It is a type of curacao, a liqueur that originated from the island of Curacao in the Caribbean. The Bols company started selling blue curacao as Crème de Ciel ("cream of the sky") in 1912, most likely a reference to the 1907 musical Miss Hook of Holland). The color blue was added artificially, usually with food coloring, to make it interesting and to give it a tropical appearance.
