Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform that emerged from an initiative within Twitter Inc. to develop a decentralized social network protocol, now known as the AT Protocol. Bluesky is a text-oriented social media platform on which users can post messages as long as 300 characters, similar to Twitter. Bluesky is a decentralized, invite-only social network built on an open-source protocol. It is a federated design and community-specific moderation. Each social network using the protocol would be called an "application". Bluesky operates its own official network, Bluesky Social, a centralized service running on proprietary software for its servers and client apps, whereas part of the protocol implementation has been released under MIT license. Bluesky is currently only available to desktop and iPhone users, with Android access in the works. Users need an invite code to create an account, and they can sign up for the waiting list at the bsky.app website. As of September 2023, Bluesky has hit 1 million users.
