Bluesky is a decentralized social network created by Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, and developed in parallel with Twitter. It is a text-oriented social media platform where users can post messages as long as 300 characters, similar to Twitter. Bluesky is built on an open-source protocol called the AT Protocol, developed by the Bluesky team, which provides transparency into how the app was built and works. The platform operates on a federated network that allows servers to communicate with one another at a speed that can keep up with the extreme volume of a social media site. Bluesky is accessible via a web browser or an app for iOS and Android, and it is still in development. The service is currently in an invite-only beta, but the company has specified plans to open it up to the general public later. As of September 12, 2023, Bluesky has 1 million users.
