Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection that affects the small airways in the lungs called bronchioles. It is usually caused by a viral infection, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being the most common cause. Other viruses that can cause bronchiolitis include adenovirus, influenza, and parainfluenza. Bronchiolitis usually affects children under the age of 2, with a peak age of 3 to 6 months.
Bronchiolitis starts with symptoms similar to a common cold, such as a runny nose, mild cough, and fever. After 1 or 2 days, the cough may get worse, and the child may begin to breathe faster. Wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing out, is also a common symptom. In severe cases, the child may have trouble breathing, and their skin may turn blue due to a lack of oxygen, which requires emergency treatment.
