BSS stands for Business Support System, which is a term used to describe the software programs that help telecommunications service providers manage and streamline all customer-facing activities. BSS is used to manage customer-facing business activities such as orders, billing, customer engagement, revenue, and new products. It supports four processes: product management, order management, revenue management, and customer management. BSS is one of the two components that a telecommunications service provider uses to run its business operations towards customers, the other being OSS (Operations Support System). While OSS maintains network inventory, management, and operations, BSS handles orders, customer relationships, and billing management. The two systems work closely together, which is why they are often grouped together in terms like BSS/OSS, despite being two separate entities.
