Buwan ng Wika is a month-long annual observance in the Philippines held every August to promote the national language, Filipino. It was originally celebrated as Linggo ng Wika, a week-long holiday that coincided with the birthday of a famous Tagalog literary artist, Francisco Baltazar. The celebration was later extended to cover the whole month of August through Proclamation No. 1041 by President Fidel V. Ramos in 1997. The Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino is the lead agency in charge of organizing events in relation to the observances. The celebration is usually held in schools, and various activities are done to promote the Filipino language and culture, such as sabayang pagbigkas, balagtasan, paggawa ng slogan, paggawa ng mga sanaysay, pagbigkas ng mga tula, pagsasayaw ng mga katutubong sayaw, and pag-awit ng mga katutubong awit. Celebrating Buwan ng Wika is not only a celebration of language but also a tribute to the countrys rich history and culture. It is an opportunity to understand ones roots, nurture a deep sense of cultural pride, and foster a lasting connection to Filipino identity.
