Calgon is a brand of bath and beauty products, laundry detergent booster, and water softener. The original Calgon product was a water softener that was first put on the market in 1933 by Calgon, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today, Calgon water softener contains the active ingredient sodium citrate and is less problematic in wastewater treatment than phosphates. Calgon bath and beauty products were sold to Coty, Inc. and then acquired by Ascendia Brands in 2007. In 2013, private equity firm Yellow Wood acquired Ilex Consumer Products Group, which included Calgon, and it is now part of their portfolio company, PDC Brands. Calgon laundry detergent booster is used to remove hard water minerals that trap dirt into fabric fibers and remove detergent build-up and soap scum that cause clothing to appear dull and faded. Calgon is also a brand of water softener produced by Reckitt).
