It works by forming a barrier on the skin to protect it from irritants and moisture. Calmoseptine ointment can also provide a physical moisture barrier, keeping feces, urine, and wound drainage from intact and injured skin. It contains menthol, which has been shown to cause vasodilation, increase circulation to an area, and aid in healing. Additionally, it has mild antiseptic ingredients that may help prevent secondary bacterial and fungal infections of the skin. Calmoseptine ointment should be applied externally to the affected area up to 6 times daily or after each bowel movement. It is for use on the skin only and should not be used on deep or puncture wounds or in or around the eyes.
