Catnip, also known by its scientific name Nepeta cataria, is a member of the mint family. The active compound in catnip, nepetalactone, triggers a response in some cats, inducing behaviors like rolling, rubbing, purring, and heightened playfulness. It is a perennial herb native to Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and areas of China. The active ingredient in catnip is an essential oil called nepetalactone, which mimics feline sex hormones, causing cats to display behaviors similar to a female cat in heat. Catnip is available in various forms, including dried, fresh, and sprays, and is generally safe for cats, with mild stomach upset being the only known adverse effect.
