In motorcycles, "cc" stands for cubic centimeters, which is used to measure the displacement of the engine. Displacement refers to the amount of space that the engines pistons sweep within one stroke, and more displacement can mean a more powerful engine. The larger the compression chamber, the more room there is for air and fuel to be compressed, and thus a higher-cc engine generates more power and speed than a lower-cc engine. Different types of motorcycles are made for different types of riding, and the various engine sizes have their own unique advantages. Engine size ranges from around 300cc on the low end to upwards of 1000cc for high-powered cruiser and touring models. The cubic capacity of the engine is a determining factor in understanding how much output the engine can produce in terms of torque, horsepower, and mileage.
