CERN in Switzerland
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is an intergovernmental organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954, it is based in Meyrin, a western suburb of Geneva, on the France–Switzerland border. CERN comprises 23 member states and is one of the worlds largest and most respected centers for scientific research.
Physicists and engineers at CERN are probing the fundamental structure of the universe using purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors. The laboratory is often referred to as the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, and its main area of research is particle physics – the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces acting between them.
