Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is a type of heart disease where the arteries of the heart cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart. It is also called ischaemic heart disease or coronary artery disease. CHD is a major cause of death in the UK and worldwide. The main symptoms of CHD are chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, pain throughout the body, feeling faint, and feeling sick (nausea) . However, not everyone has the same symptoms, and some people may not have any before CHD is diagnosed. CHD is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries to your heart, which causes the arteries to get narrow, and blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop. CHD is different from Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs), which are present at birth and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works.
