A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing a combustible material, typically tobacco, that is rolled into thin paper for smoking. When ignited at one end, it smolders, and the resulting smoke is orally inhaled via the opposite end. Cigarette smoking is the most common method of tobacco consumption. The basic components of most cigarettes are tobacco, chemical additives, a filter, and paper wrapping. When burned, cigarettes create more than 7,000 chemicals, at least 69 of which are known to cause cancer, and many are toxic. Some of these chemicals are also found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels, unlike cigarettes. In addition to tobacco cigarettes, there are also electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, which are battery-operated devices that deliver nicotine with flavorings and other chemicals to the lungs in vapor instead of smoke. E-cigarette companies often advertise them as safer than traditional cigarettes because they dont burn tobacco, but researchers know little about the health risks of using these devices.
