A cleanroom is a controlled environment that maintains a very low concentration of airborne particulates, such as dust, airborne microbes, and aerosol particles, to provide the cleanest area possible. Cleanrooms are designed to keep everything from dust to airborne organisms or vaporized particles away from it, and so from whatever material is being handled inside it. They are commonly needed for scientific research and in industrial production for all nanoscale processes, such as semiconductor manufacturing. Cleanrooms are classified into different classes depending on the number of particles allowed in the air per cubic meter, and they also control variables like temperature, airflow, and humidity. Cleanrooms are used in practically every industry where small particles can adversely affect the manufacturing process, such as semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical device and life sciences, as well as critical process manufacturing common in aerospace, optics, military, and Department of Energy. Cleanroom clothing is used to prevent substances from being released off the wearers body and contaminating the environment.
