College football refers to gridiron football played by teams of student athletes fielded by American universities, colleges, and military academies. It is a popular sport in the United States, with a long history dating back to 1869. Unlike most other sports in North America, no official minor league farm organizations exist in American or Canadian football, so college football is generally considered to be the second tier of American and Canadian football, one step ahead of high school competition, and one step below professional competition (the NFL). The top division of college football is called the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and it is very competitive with large stadiums packed with fans. The NCAA sets rules and regulations to ensure fair play and eligibility of the players. The college football postseason is determined by the College Football Playoffs, where four teams are selected by a committee to play for the national championship
