Companion mode is a feature in Google Meet that allows users to join a meeting using two devices. It is primarily aimed at hybrid workspaces, where multiple people join a meeting from a conference room. They can use a secondary device to join the meeting in Companion mode to access features like chat, screen sharing, and more. Here are some key features of Companion mode:

  • Mic and video: In Companion mode, your mic and video are turned off to avoid any audio feedback or echo.

  • Camera and self-view: Your video camera is turned off in Companion mode, and your tile is hidden from the participant grid to make room for other video feeds. When you raise your hand in Companion mode, Meet displays your avatar and name followed by (Companion) to other participants.

  • Join and leave notifications: All participants are notified when Companion mode participants connect or disconnect.

  • Guests: The meeting host must approve people who arent signed in to a Google Account.

  • Present with Companion mode on your laptop: You can quickly share your laptop screen in Companion mode.

  • Chat, polls, Q&A, and host controls: Depending on your Google Workspace edition, you can use these features in Companion mode.

To use Companion mode, you can click "Use Companion mode" from the pre-join screen or use the short link g.co/companion.
