Conformity assessment in India refers to the process of verifying that products comply with the requirements of applicable standards and technical regulations. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standards body of India and is responsible for preparing and promoting standards for adoption by Indian industry. The BIS operates the Certification Marks Scheme, which was launched in 1955 and is popularly known as the ISI Marking Scheme. In 2016, with the notification of the BIS Act 2016, the BIS was authorized to undertake conformity assessment of goods, articles, services, systems, and processes as per the relevant schemes given in the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The conformity assessment schemes of BIS provide confidence to consumers about the quality, safety, and reliability of products and ensure consumer protection. The types of conformity assessments carried out by the Export Inspection Agencies, under the EIC, include approval of units and establishments, consignment inspection, and testing and certification of products for exports.
