The conjunctiva is a thin, clear membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye (the sclera) . It plays a crucial role in protecting and lubricating the eye by producing mucus and tears, preventing irritants from entering the eye, and contributing to immune surveillance. The conjunctiva also contains blood vessels, fibrous tissue, and lymphatic channels, and it helps to keep the front surface of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids moist and lubricated. Additionally, it provides nutrients to the eye and lids and contains special cells that secrete a component of the tear film to help prevent dry eye syndrome. Common conditions that affect the conjunctiva include conjunctivitis (pink eye) and subconjunctival hemorrhages.
