Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. The symptoms of conjunctivitis can include:

  • Pink or red color in the white of the eye(s)
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva and/or eyelids
  • Increased tear production
  • Feeling like a foreign body is in the eye(s) or an urge to rub the eye(s)
  • Itching, irritation, and/or burning
  • Discharge (pus or mucus)
  • Crusting of eyelids or lashes, especially in the morning
  • Contact lenses that feel uncomfortable and/or do not stay in place on the eye

The causes of conjunctivitis can vary, including viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. Viral conjunctivitis is the most common type and is highly contagious, often spreading through schools and other crowded places. It usually causes burning, red eyes with a watery discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis is also contagious and can lead to discharge (pus), which can cause eyelids to stick together. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious and is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, pool chlorine, car fumes, or something else in the environment. Conjunctivitis usually goes away on its own within 1-2 weeks, but if the symptoms last longer than that, it is recommended to see an ophthalmologist.
